Summary: Kyungsoo woke in an unfamiliar room, only to find out he was stuck in a menagerie and the mate of an alien.
Author's Note: Yeah, this was rushed(especially the ending). But I still hope you like it :)
There was a faint humming sound that woke Kyungsoo from his slumber. The sound reminded him of an old fridge that struggled to maintain it’s temperature. He slowly opened his eyes and came face to face with a blank wall. It took him a second for his eyes to gain focus.
He slowly sat up and looked around the room.
Where was he?
He was seated on a plain bed, without a headboard. The wall that he faced contained openings. One led to a bathroom, or what Kyungsoo thought was a bathroom from where he sat. The other was harder to tell. The metal door was shut and from what he could tell it had many locks on it as if to keep something out...or something in.
He started to feel deeply concerned as he continued to look around. There wasn’t much in the room, as it was quite small.
The wall in which the bed was against was solid, like the other. But the remaining two were what caused the panic that set in.
They were transparent.
Kyungsoo got off the bed and made his way towards the clear wall directly across from the bed. The light from the room spilled out of the transparent walls to the outside. But the surrounding area was too dark from Kyungsoo to see. Once he was close enough he cupped his hands around his eyes to try and see in the darkness beyond.
There was something in the shadows. A figure. Kyungsoo could almost make it out. He could see if shifting from side to side like it was walking towards him. Kyungsoo took a couple steps back to get away from whatever it was.
The figure stepped into the light. It--no, he-- was taller than Kyungsoo. He wore a black on black suit, with the top button undone, which exposed the upper portion of his sternum. But what struck Kyungsoo, wasn’t his eyes, that were emphasized by the eye shadow that was faintly drawn around them. Nor was it his hair that was half black and half white. His hair must’ve gone down to his chin, but it was swept back and held in place.
But it was his ears that were ever so slightly pointed, that Kyungsoo almost didn’t notice. And his black nails. His nails weren’t terribly long, but they were longer that there was a point to them, like an overly defined almond.
He turned his head slightly, as he regarded Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo, on the other hand, stared at the other. Afraid and confused. The man reminded him of someone.
The other rose his left and pointed at his ring finger. What rested around it was a black band. Then he pointed towards Kyungsoo’s own left hand. Kyungsoo looked down at his hand and saw the same black band around his ring finger.
“This ring allows you to understand what I'm saying.”
“Why--why wouldn’t I understand?” Kyungsoo asked. The man smirked and removed his finger and signalled for Kyungsoo to do the same.
When the ring was removed, the other looked expectantly.
The man opened his mouth and started to speak. What he spoke was a language that Kyungsoo didn’t understand. He wasn’t even sure that it was a language from Earth. Kyungsoo put his ring back on, while the other spoke.
“--the ring is needed for you to understand my language, and for me to understand yours,” the man slipped his ring back on.
“Where am I?”
“Not on Earth.”
“Not…? If I’m not on Earth then where am I?” Kyungsoo clenched his fists.
“My planet,” the man said. “My home.”
“Why am I here?” The man took a finger and used his nail to drag it on a circle against the glass. Kyungsoo was wondering if he was drawing a circle around him.
“You are my mate.”
Huh?
“What are you talking about?”
“You are my mate. My seer had told me about you, Kyungsoo.”
He knows my name? Kyungsoo thought. He had so many questions. What was happening?
“So, you abducted me and locked me in a room?”
“I don't have to justify my actions.”
“Out of courtesy of me being your mate you should,” Kyungsoo said. He took a couple steps towards the man. The man said nothing.
“Who are you?” Kyungsoo tried again. He wanted answers but it looked like he was going to have to fight tooth and nail for it.
“You can call me, Jongin,” he said. Jongin turned his head to his left where a figure emerged.
“My lord,” the stranger said. He looked to be about the same height as Kyungsoo. The stranger looked towards Kyungsoo briefly. He noticed how the stranger had the same slightly pointed ears as Jongin. However, he had a lip ring that connects to the collar of his jacket. “The exhibition will be opening soon.”
Exhibition? Kyungsoo thought.
Jongin nodded his head once. “Inform him.” Jongin turned and walked away. Kyungsoo watched as the darkness swallowed him.
The stranger turned his attention toward Kyungsoo. “There will be guests arriving for a viewing. All you need to do is act however you humans normally act. Of course, if you feel so inclined, the bathroom has a door you may use. That being said, if you abuse that, we will remove the door accordingly.”
“What do you mean viewing? What...where am I?”
“You are in Lord Jongin’s personal menagerie. You are his prized attraction that everyone has been dying to see,” the stranger said. There was a look of pity that crossed his face. “You will be here at all hours of the day. If there is anything you need, there is an intercom in the bathroom that you may use which will connect you with Chanyeol. He is your charge.”
Kyungsoo wasn’t sure what to make of all of this. He was locked in a menagerie on some planet that wasn’t Earth, meaning that he was interacting with aliens. And now he is some prized possession of someone who claims he is his mate.
“This has to be a dream,” Kyungsoo said more to himself.
“Unfortunately, for you, it is not.”
The stranger started to turn away, in the direction Jongin had walked. Kyungsoo watched as he walked away. There was no way that this could be real...is there?
Kyungsoo shook his head and decided that there must be a way for him to get out. Looking at the bed knew it was useless, so he went to the bathroom. There was a shower, toilet, sink, a mirror and the intercom. There were only basic necessities. Kyungsoo looked at himself in the mirror. He didn’t look any different. He still wore his own clothes; a simple white t-shirt and some black jeans. Kyungsoo silently cursed as he made his way out of the bathroom. He looked around the room again, and saw in the upper corner, on the farthest wall away from him, where the solid wall met with the transparent one, was a camera. Kyungsoo rolled his eyes as he walked left.
He stared at the metal door. There wasn’t a handle for him to try and play with. In fact, other than the dents of locks, the door was smooth and flush with the wall. Kyungsoo closed his eyes and rested his forehead against the door.
He felt defeated. He knew he should find a way to escape. Find a way to get home. Home. Earth. Was he really on a different planet? Even if he did escape the room where was he supposed to go? How was he going to get home?
Kyungsoo heard a lock flip. He opened his eyes at the sound and then took steps away from the door. Should he try to force his way out? Should--
The door swung open into the room. It swung all the way until it hit the door with a thud which made Kyungsoo jump. On the other side was a tall male. He had deep red hair that stuck up in places. He gave Kyungsoo a quick smile as he made his way into the room with a double tray, utility cart. Once the man was inside he closed the door.
Kyungsoo took more steps away. He didn’t like the thought of being alone in a room with a stranger.
“Kyungsoo,” the man smiled at him. He gave him another wide smile. It was like his smile was connected with his slightly pointed ears that stuck out slightly. “My name is Chanyeol. I am your charge.”
Kyungsoo didn’t say anything. His eyes flickered down to the cart that held a covered tray. What was beneath it?
Chanyeol must’ve caught onto Kyungsoo silent question. “Ah, this is your breakfast,” Chanyeol lifted the lid and Kyungsoo saw an array of food. He recognized it all. There was a small bowl of fruit. Some eggs with toast. A small glass of orange juice.
“I thought we weren’t on Earth,” Kyungsoo whispered as he felt just how empty his stomach was.
“We aren’t,” Chanyeol gave him a soft smile. “But, we are able to get human food. I figured it would be better for you to have food you’re used to than to have ours.”
Kyungsoo left out a short laugh. His heart started to sink as he began to realize just how real this situation was.
“Take a seat,” Chanyeol said as he pushed the tray towards the bed. Kyungsoo tensed when he passed beside him. “I’ll wait outside until you’re done, you can use the intercom and I’ll come. The exhibition is opening in about thirty minutes.”
“What is this exhibition everyone keeps talking about?” Kyungsoo asked. He didn’t move to eat as hungry as he was. There were more important things.
Chanyeol pursed his lips in contemplation. “How about this I’ll answer whatever questions you have, if you eat. Deal?”
It was Kyungsoo’s turn to purse his lips. “Any and all questions?”
“To the best of my ability.”
Kyungsoo nodded and walked over to the bed and sat down. He picked up the fork that rested beside the plate and picks at a fruit. When he put in his mouth and started to chew, tasting the sweetness of the melon, Chanyeol answered his question.
“The exhibition is a collection of Lord Jongin’s possessions. They arrange from various creatures and aliens that he found during his travels,” Chanyeol said. He still stood in front of Kyungsoo.
“Can you sit, or something? You standing is making me uncomfortable,” Kyungsoo said. Chanyeol moved and sat a little further down the bed. He gave Kyungsoo his space. “Who is this Lord Jongin? He said I was here because I’m his mate?”
“You’re his--” Chanyeol gaped at him. “Wow, this makes so much sense.”
“What makes sense?” Kyungsoo took another piece of the fruit and popped in his mouth. He couldn’t help but wonder who Jongin reminded Kyungsoo of.
“Well, no one has ever really… taken a human before,” Chanyeol explained. “It’s just this unsaid rule not to take any human from Earth. So when Lord Jongin announced he had a human in his exhibit the citizens freaked out. Jongin then outright outlawed human abduction.”
Kyungsoo narrowed his eyes. He kidnapped him then outlawed it? Great way to cheat the system.
“But you being his mate, makes plenty of sense as to why you’re here.” Chanyeol said.
“It explains why I’m locked up here?” Kyungsoo glared at the food in front of him.
Chanyeol nodded. “Because he’s the Lord, if anyone were to find out that he had a mate, a human mate for the matter, it wouldn’t bode well for you. He probably figured that taking you and putting you here would be the safest option.”
“Or he could’ve just left me on Earth,” Kyungsoo said. He started to push the food around his plate. He put down the fork and picked up a piece of toast.
“Mates for us is… if we find out that we have a mate,” Chanyeol said. “We do everything we can to get them, to protect them. It’s just in our nature.”
“Are you going to do anything, now that you know why I’m here?” Kyungsoo said quietly looking at the other. He unintentionally gave Chanyeol important information.
“You don’t have to worry about that, I don’t like violence or hurt others,” Chanyeol said. “I like taking care of things.”
Kyungsoo nodded his head and went back to his food when another question popped into his head. “So, what exactly if Jongin a Lord of?”
Chanyeol barked a laugh. “He is Lord of Starryden. Where we are now.”
“Is this a planet?”
Chanyeol nodded. “Yes, the planet is called Orden. But Jongin controls about half the world, which is Starryden. The other half is Shadowmist.”
“Do you know who that guy was with Jongin? The one with the lip ring?”
“Ah, that’s Baekhyun, he’s Lord Jongin’s assistant,” Chanyeol said. “He’s intimidating at first but once you get to know him, he’s not that bad.”
“What about Jongin?”
Chanyeol opened his mouth to say something but then closed it. It took him a moment before he found the right words. “I shouldn’t say anything about him.”
Kyungsoo nodded his head. If Jongin was as powerful as Chanyeol made him seem than Chanyeol would need to be careful what he says.
“You should quickly finish up,” Chanyeol said as he stood. “The exhibition will start soon.”
“What...Am I--” Kyungsoo wasn’t even sure what his question was. He didn’t want to do anything. He didn’t want to be here. But he should at least know what to expect right?
“You don’t need to worry. No one can get in except myself and Lord Jongin. Those walls are for viewing only. All you need to do is just exist. Don’t do anything you don’t want to.”
Kyungsoo nodded his head.
“But…” Chanyeol started. “You have a door on your bathroom, just don’t close yourself in it while the exhibition is running…”
Kyungsoo nodded his head again. “Yes, Baekhyun, warned me earlier.”
Kyungsoo quickly finished off his food and Chanyeol left, with the cart, reminding him about the intercom if he ever needed anything.
Kyungsoo was lying on the bed, there wasn’t much for him to do. He was trying to remember what had happened to him. He had just gotten back home after a date with this boy he had been seeing for the last six months. He was incredibly sweet and caring. He was someone who Kyungsoo needed to keep him grounded in his life. Kyungsoo was sure that if he was still on Earth he would’ve fallen in love.
A beep sounded throughout his room. There was an announcement that ran through.
The exhibit has now been open. The new exhibit will be opened until lunch where there will be a quick break then will presume. Enjoy your time.
Kyungsoo sat up when he heard murmuring coming closer and closer to him. He didn’t see anything at first. Just the sounds.
The first thing that came into view was small, like a child. Maybe it was a child. But it was hard to say as what was in front of Kyungsoo wasn’t human. It was different than the other three Kyungsoo had seen. This was had yellow skin, like the skin of a lemon. It had basic human features, minus the hair. Instead of hair, it looked as if it had a head of horns. It also had a tail that wrapped itself around the that was reached out toward the window.
Kyungsoo got up and slowly approached it. He didn’t get too close, just close enough the both of them to analyze each other.
“Hi,” it said quietly to Kyungsoo. It had a child’s voice.
“Hi,” Kyungsoo said just as quietly.
The child gasped. “You can speak my language?”
Kyungsoo held up his left hand. The child saw the ring. “This allows me to understand.”
“You don’t look stupid.”
“What?” Kyungsoo scrunched his eyebrows. Did stupid have a look?
“My friends said that humans were stupid. You don’t look stupid to me. Mom and dad said that it wasn’t nice to judge creatures before meeting them.”
Kyungsoo gave the child a small smile. “I’m not stupid.”
This simple moment with the child didn’t last long as others started to join. Kyungsoo walked a couple steps back, as, who Kyungsoo assumes are the child's parents came, along with a crowd of others. Each looking different. Some looked like Jongin and his people. But many were different creatures.
Most of the crowd that came and went were silent. There were some comments here and there, but nothing harmful.
Kyungsoo had taken a seat on the bed as creatures came and went. But still the child stayed, staring at Kyungsoo. He was surprised that the child and his parents were still here. That they hadn’t left yet. When he looked at them, they had given him sympathetic looks.
“He doesn’t look smart,” one of them said. Kyungsoo glared at the crowd. He glanced down at the child who gave him a sad look. Almost like the child understood the situation that Kyungsoo was in. “He looks just as dumb as the rest.”
“Do all humans just sit? No wonder they are uncivilized,” someone else said. The child’s parents started to look uneasy.
“For a human, he's quite handsome,” someone else said, which earned some laughter. Kyungsoo was starting to feel ridiculed. The parents ushered their child away as the comments started to become more and more harsh.
Human this. Human that. Human. Human. Human. Human. They said human like he was a piece of gum stuck to the bottom of their shoe.
Over and over. It wouldn’t stop. Kyungsoo got up from his stop and went to the bathroom and sat against the wall, he was hidden from their view. He could hear their disapproval. But he didn’t care. Their voices still rang in his ears. He covered his ear. If only there was a way to stop the voices--
The ring.
Kyungsoo pulled his hands away from his ear and took off the ring. It got snagged on the first joint, but after that it slides off with ease. He reached up and placed the ring on the corner of the sink. He heard the voices pick up at the sight of him, so he quickly sunk back down and hid behind the wall. As much as he wanted to shut the door to shut out the sounds, he remembered what the stranger, Baekhyun, had said. He didn’t want to risk losing the door.
Kyungsoo wrapped his arms around his legs and rested his head against his knees. The murmur of the unfamiliar language wasn’t as harsh to him now that he couldn’t understand it. Kyungsoo felt himself smile at it. It’s own way, it was peaceful.
It was a warm summer day. Kyungsoo was just leaving his local coffee shop to meet up with his friends. He was on coffee duty today, so he had a tray in his left hand. In his right was his phone, where Sehun was telling him some story about something he could tell Kyungsoo in ten minutes when they meet up. Kyungsoo was distracted and through his distraction he didn’t see the man who turned the corner. Nor did he see that one of the outdoor chairs were pushed in a way that Kyungsoo would easily trip.
As Kyungsoo walked away from the door, his foot snagged on the chair. He felt a strong grip on his arm as his face landed in a chest. The hand on his arm tightened ever so slightly when Kyungsoo looked up at the man who rescued him and the drinks.
“O-oh, sorry,” Kyungsoo stuttered. This man was handsome. He had blond hair that was push out of his face. He had such a soft expression.
“Don’t worry, I don’t mind saving cuties like you,” the man said. “My name is Kai.”
He didn’t realize it was quiet until he heard Chanyeol’s voice.
“Kyungsoo?”
Kyungsoo lifted his head, his dream pushed to the back of his mind, and Chanyeol was standing by the bathroom door. Kyungsoo stood with stiff joints as Chanyeol smiled softly at him and spoke. But it didn’t make sense. Kyungsoo looked at him confused, when he remembered he took off the ring.
“Everything okay?” Chanyeol said again, once the ring was on.
He brought in another cart with him. Lunch time. Kyungsoo scoffed. It was his feeding time. This is what his life has come to now. He felt anger rise in his chest. He was not some show. Some exhibition to the world.
“Do you want to eat?” Chanyeol asked softly. Chanyeol’s kindness didn’t help with Kyungsoo’s anger. Kyungsoo glared at Chanyeol and stomped over to the cart and flipped it over. The food was scattered over the floor and there was some broken glass.
“No,” Kyungsoo said. He stormed back to the bathroom. “I don’t want to eat. I don’t want to show myself off to creatures that are just going to gawk at me all fucking day. I don’t want to do anything.”
Kyungsoo slammed the bathroom door shut and sat where he was before. He heard Chanyeol sigh and pieces of glass being picked up.
As Kyungsoo’s anger started to recede he started to feel bad for his actions. Well, not so much getting angry and flipping the food everywhere. More just having Chanyeol clean up the mess. He had only just met him, but Chanyeol hadn’t done anything to warrant Kyungsoo’s anger.
There was a soft knock on the door.
“I’ll cancel the rest of the day,” Chanyeol said. “I’ll be back in a couple hours for your dinner.”
Kyungsoo let out a breath when he heard the other door shut. Kyungsoo sunk down and rested his head against the cold floor.
Kyungsoo didn’t know when he felt asleep. But he awoke to shouts in his room. He could tell that it was in his room, because when he sat up he saw the shadows beneath the door crack. One of the voices was Chanyeol.
“Leave him alone,” Chanyeol said. “He needs times.”
“I don’t care if he needs time,” another voice said. “People paid money to see him, so they are going to see him.”
“Not. Today. I’m his charge and I decide what’s good for him. And I’m telling you that his exhibit is closed until further notice.”
“Lord Jongin will hear about this.”
There was a slam of a door and then a sigh. Kyungsoo stood, though his body hurt from sleeping on the hard floor. He cautiously cracked the door opened. He could see Chanyeol a couple steps in front of him. He had a hand in his hair.
Kyungsoo opened it slowly, causing it to creak. Chanyeol turned around at the sound. The pair stared at each other. Kyungsoo looked away first.
“I’m sorry,” Kyungsoo was apologizing for more than just causing a mess.
“Don’t worry about any of it,” Chanyeol scratched the back of his head. “You won’t have any visitors. I’ll come back in a couple hours with food.”
Chanyeol moved to the other door.
“Wait,” Kyungsoo said before he could stop himself. “Do you think you can stay… for a bit?”
“Sure, Kyungsoo,” Chanyeol said. “Shall we sit on the bed?”
Kyungsoo nodded. He sat on the upper portion and Chanyeol at the bottom.
“I’m sorry that they were rude to you,” Chanyeol said. “Most of them are rich assholes who don’t know when they are being rude.”
“Not your fault,” Kyungsoo said. “There was one, a child, I think, who seemed very kind.”
Chanyeol hummed. “I know who you’re talking about. He frequents here quite often. Good kid.”
Kyungsoo and Chanyeol sat together on the bed for the next couples of hours talking about whatever came to mind. Kyungsoo learned more about the side of the world that Jongin controlled. It was a multi-cultural nation. And had a lot of properties similar to Earth. Cross-cultural marriage was challenging for them. Not because it was frowned upon, but because the biology of each creature is so different that come aren’t compatible with each other.
Kyungsoo was sure that if he met Chanyeol under different circumstances, they would’ve been fast friends.
Chanyeol suddenly jumped off his side of the bed. “I should probably go get your dinner ready.”
Kyungsoo watched as he walked towards the door. Chanyeol opened it when Kyungsoo stopped him with a question. “Do you think one day I would be able to leave here?”
“It’s hard for me to say,” Chanyeol gave him a small smile. “I hope you do.”
Chanyeol opened the door more and gasped when he saw a figure standing on the other side. He let the door go, and fell into a bow, as the door swung open more, revealing Jongin and Baekhyun. Both were dressed how they were earlier this morning.
Jongin looked from Chanyeol to Kyungsoo and then back to Chanyeol. Kyungsoo stood from the bed.
“What are you doing in here?”
“I was keeping him company, my lord.” Chanyeol was still bowed. He shuffled his feet and moved to the side when Jongin proceeded to walk further into the room. Kyungsoo didn’t like how Jongin made Chanyeol afraid.
“Instead of opening the exhibit?”
“H-he wasn’t feeling well, my lord.”
Jongin looked over to Kyungsoo. He was sure his cheeks were still red from laughing earlier.
“He looks plenty fine to me,” Jongin said. Chanyeol said nothing. “You may leave and fetch his dinner.”
“W-will you be joining him, my lord?”
“No,” Jongin said. He didn’t turn back to see Chanyeol bow once more and shut the door, leaving just Jongin and Kyungsoo in the room.
Kyungsoo felt his heart start to beat harder. He was feeling nervous being alone with the male. He did notice though, that there was something particular about him that Kyungsoo couldn’t place.
“How are you finding your room?” Jongin started to saunter around the room, though, there wasn’t anything in it. Kyungsoo was watching Jongin’s face trying to understand the contours of his face.
“Hard to say,” Kyungsoo said. “Haven’t been here for 24 hours yet.”
Jongin looked back at Kyungsoo. It was his nose that made Kyungsoo think. “Do you...not like it?”
“Would you like being locked up and having people gawking at you?”
Jongin didn’t say anything. Instead he sauntered his way over to Kyungsoo. As he was drawing closer, Kyungsoo got the chance to look at his nose more. He could see the faint smile lines. He could perfectly imagine what Jongin’s smile would look like. “What were you talking to your charge about?”
“His name is Chanyeol,” Kyungsoo said. He crossed his arms over his chest, like he was defying whatever authority Jongin had over him. “And I don’t think it’s any of your business what we were talking about.”
Jongin smirked. Kyungsoo had seen that smirk before. “I could always get the answers out of Chanyeol.”
“He was telling me about your world and what it meant to be your mate.”
“You told him you were my mate?” Jongin asked with urgency. He gasped Kyungsoo’s arms so securely that Kyungsoo felt his nails against his skin. It reminded Kyungsoo of the first day Kyungsoo met that boy. He had a firm grip, much like Jongin. But anytime Kyungsoo tried to imagine that boy’s face, he could only picture Jongin.
“Yes? He said he wouldn’t say anything,” Kyungsoo said. “He said he wouldn’t hurt me.”
Jongin glared at Kyungsoo but gently released his arms. “From now on, you ask me things you want to know about your new home. You aren't allowed to talk to Chanyeol anymore.”
Kyungsoo grit his teeth. “I am not one of your citizens. You can’t tell me what to do.”
“You’re right, but I can tell Chanyeol what to do,” Jongin said. “Maybe I should just get you a new charge, so I don’t have to worry about the two of you talking.”
“Why are you so possessive?” Kyungsoo sighed. “You don’t even know me.”
“I know more about you than you could possibly imagine. But I can’t tell you what.”
Jongin had left after Chanyeol had arrived. Jongin didn’t say anything to him as he left and Kyungsoo didn’t bother to explain to Chanyeol what they talked about. Kyungsoo wanted to forget about it. But in the corner of his mind, he couldn’t stop but wonder why Jongin reminded him of someone. Something had sparked in Kyungsoo’s chest when he heard Jongin’s last words. They couldn’t possibly have met before. So where had Kyungsoo seen him?
Kyungsoo was on another date with Kai. They weren’t official or anything yet, but Kyungsoo was hoping that soon they would be. They were supposed to meet up at their usual spot. It was a fountain in the park that was between both of their homes. Kyungsoo was surprised to see Kai there before him, usually it was Kyungsoo who arrived first. Kyungsoo studied him as he approached. He tall slender frame was leaning over the fountain as he used his finger to make circles in the water.
He had to admit that Kai’s back was one of Kyungsoo’s favourite things. He got closer and closer, until he placed his hand on Kai’s lower back as he whispered in his ear.
“Did you make a wish?”
Jongin had jumped in surprised, but the tension left after he realized it was Kyungsoo. He faced the shorted with a small smile on his face. The smile was defined by the lines that already defined his face.
“I did, but I can’t tell you what.”
Kyungsoo woke the next day. He understood why Jongin was so familiar to him. It was because Jongin was Kai. Or at least that would be the only logical explanation. The similarity between their speeches, didn’t necessarily mean that they were the same person. Kyungsoo understood that. But there was this nagging feeling in his chest that made him want to believe that Jongin and Kai were the same person.
If he was like Kai, and Kyungsoo would need to word his question carefully. Kai never liked direct questions that made him feel uncomfortable. But Kyungsoo didn’t see him for a couple days. Jongin hadn’t stopped by nor was there any word of him. Kyungsoo felt like he was reaching his boiling point. And the constant faces of strangers that gawked at him all day didn’t help his temperament. So when Jongin finallydecided to return, Kyungsoo was all but ready to outright ask him.
“How long have you know about me, being your mate?” Kyungsoo asked.
“Six months or so,” Jongin said. He narrowed his eyes at Kyungsoo. The same amount of time he has known Kai.
“So you were spying on me, or something?”
Jongin didn’t answer.
“What’s interesting is that yesterday, you said something to me that only one person would’ve known,” Kyungsoo said. He wondered if Jongin was catching on to what Kyungsoo was saying. Jongin made no movement, nor sound, to show that he was.
“Kai,” Kyungsoo whispered as a test. Jongin looked at him like he was shocked by a jump scare. He eyebrows were scrunched and his hands were in a defensive position. He knew he was right then.
Before Kyungsoo could question him further, Jongin shook his head and turned away, quickly.
“Kai-- Jongin, don’t walk away from me,” Kyungsoo banged on the glass. But still Jongin walked away. Kyungsoo ran to the intercom and pressed the button. “Chanyeol! Chanyeol, I need you!”
“Kyungsoo?” Chanyeol’s voice sounded through the static. “What’s wrong?”
“I need your help.”
Chanyeol arrived minutes after and opened the door frantically. “What’s wrong?”
Chanyeol looked around the room but Kyungsoo grabbed onto Chanyeol’s shoulders.
“I’m fine,” he said. “But I need your help to get to Jongin. I-I need you to get me to him.”
“Kyungsoo,” Chanyeol said. Kyungsoo could tell he was going to deny his request.
“Chanyeol, please,” Kyungsoo pleaded. “Call Baekhyun or whatever, but I need to see him. I need to talk to him. Please.”
“I don’t…”
Kyungsoo inwardly sighed. “You’re my charge. You need to do whatever you can to make sure I’m okay. If I don’t talk to Jongin right now, then I won’t be okay.”
Chanyeol scratched the back of his head. He let out a breath. “Fine, come on.”
Chanyeol grabbed his wrist and brought him out of the room. Kyungsoo was surprised to see a long hallway. There were doors every couple of meters. So many doors, Kyungsoo wondered if all of them held a creature. Just how many did Jongin have?
They reached the end and Chanyeol had to take a breath before he pushed open the door. The room was empty. It looked to be a surveillance room. There was a section in the middle of the room which held multiple computers. And stacks of screen the littered the far wall. Kyungsoo could see his room. Chanyeol lets go of Kyungsoo’s wrist as he made his way to a row of lockers. He opened one, which Kyungsoo presumed was his, and grabbed some things. One of them was a wrist watch. No, it was bigger than a wrist watch. It was like something used in a sci-fi movie. Chanyeol pressed a couple buttons then stuck something in his ear. He grabbed a sweater and threw it at Kyungsoo, who put it on without a word.
“Baekhyun, where is Lord Jongin?” Chanyeol said as he grabbed onto Kyungsoo’s wrist. But before they left the room Chanyeol pulled up the hood. “It’s important, Baekhyun.”
Chanyeol rolled his eyes and the pair made their way to the exit. “Is he in the main house? Good. It’s Kyungsoo...No, nothing’s wrong, per se.”
Chanyeol and Kyungsoo walked out into the day. Kyungsoo gasped when he saw the world. There were two suns in the sky. One had a slight orange tint to it and the other was more blue. But, surprisingly, it wasn’t hot outside.Kyungsoo looked behind him at the building they just exited. It was massive, to say the least. There looked to be a second story as well.
“Please, don’t tell him. And don’t yell, but...I’m bringing Kyungsoo to him and I need your help.” Chanyeol continued to pull him forward. They were passing along the side of the building, that must’ve been for employees only. Kyungsoo looked to his left and saw a long line to enter the building. All sorts of creatures were lined up, once again. “Baekhyun, come on, it’s for the lord and his...mate.”
Chanyeol whispered the last word like it was a curse.
They walked along the ground. It was hard, like concrete. Kyungsoo looked at the building in front of them. This one had at least four stories. Kyungsoo was sure it covered almost two football fields. Why someone would need to live a place this big, baffled him. The trees, if you want to call them that, were scattered around the grounds. The trunk of the tree was a deep purple and the leaves were a shade of fuschia. How...interesting.
“Chanyeol,” Kyungsoo whispered when he noticed the guards that loitered near the building.
“Don’t worry, Kyungsoo,” Chanyeol turned and gave him a smile. “Baekhyun’s going to help us.”
Speaking of the devil, Baekhyun walked out of a door which was not too far from them. He didn’t look impressed. The pair walked up to him and he crossed his arms.
“You are damn lucky that Kyungsoo is his mate,” Baekhyun said as he let the pair inside. Baekhyun walked ahead of them and the pair followed. Kyungsoo couldn’t help but noticed the interior. If Kyungsoo had to put it into words, he would have to describe it as an extremely modern Earth home. Everything was clean cut, open, monochrome. There were pieces of technology that Kyungsoo had no idea what they did. But there was also art pieces scattered around, like pieces one would see in some high-brow museum.
Baekhyun brought them up a flight of stairs. Kyungsoo was most definitely lost. Baekhyun was moving fast, that Kyungsoo felt like he had to jog to keep up. Suddenly, Baekhyun stopped at a pair of double doors.
“This is his study,” Baekhyun said as he knocked on the doors. They heard faint ‘come in’. Baekhyun held a hand back, to keep the pair from entering just yet. “My lord, there is someone here wanting to speak with you.”
“I don’t want to see anyone right now, tell them to leave.”
Baekhyun grabbed onto Kyungsoo’s wrist and pushed him into the room as he spoke. “Sorry, my lord.”
Kyungsoo stumbled inside as the door shut. Jongin had his back facing Kyungsoo. It wasn’t until the door was completely shut that Jongin turned around and was surprised by Kyungsoo’s presence.
“What?” Jongin grit his teeth. “Damn that Baekhyun.”
“It’s not his fault,” Kyungsoo said. The interior of Jongin’s study was much like the rest of the house. Clean cut and monochrome. There was also stacks of various books and papers that scattered around the room. Perks of controlling half a world, Kyungsoo thought. “I asked Chanyeol and Baekhyun to help me.”
“Why?” Jongin was standing behind his chair. Kyungsoo to see his nails digging into the cushion.
“Because we should talk about this. Us,” Kyungsoo took a step closer to Jongin. “You were on earth with me, for half a year.”
Jongin looked down.
“Then you abducted me and lock me in a room,” Kyungsoo continued. Jongin still wasn’t looking at him. “Why didn’t you tell me back on earth? I would’ve listened to you.”
“I couldn’t risk it,” Jongin said it so quietly, Kyungsoo almost missed it. “When the seer told me about you, I was afraid that someone was going to take you. Hurt you. But I needed to make sure that you were right for me and my people.”
Kyungsoo felt his heart swell, knowing that Jongin believed he was good enough for him.
“That doesn’t excuse you locking me in a room.”
“I apologize,” Jongin said, this time making eye contact with Kyungsoo.
“Why did you leave, when I addressed you as Kai?” Kyungsoo wanted to move closer but he was sure that if he did, Jongin would close up.
“It put me into perspective. I realized what I was doing, what I did and...I am sorry.” Jongin looked away from Kyungsoo as he spoke the next words. “If you wish to go back home, you may. You were never supposed to be a prisoner.”
Kyungsoo smiled softly at his words and walked towards him until they were face to face. “ I don’t know, I think your world is growing on me, or at least, Chanyeol is--” There was a flicker in Jongin’s eye. Kyungsoo narrowed his eyes. “--you can’t do anything to him. He was one of the first ones to treat me kindly. He is my friend.”
Instead of saying anything, Jongin reached out a hand and interlocked their fingers. He felt the tip of Jongin’s nails graze his hand. He was going to have to get used to them and everything about this new world. It was going to take time. Many things were going to take time, but Kyungsoo was okay with the wait.
“So, are we starting whatever it was between us over again?” Kyungsoo asked as an afterthought. “Or are we a thing now?”
“Whatever you want,” Jongin said. Kyungsoo hummed as he tightened his grip on Jongin’s hand.
