Author’s Note: I was asked to be a last minute pinch-hitter for this exchange and had only a couple of days to write this so I do hope you don’t find it too lacking- I tried my best! I hope that the prompter enjoys what I came up with (I just went with what came to me when I read it). Please excuse any spelling/grammar/typing errors lol. Thanks so much to the Mods for putting together this exchange for our Kadi month! And thanks in advance to anybody who reads this ^^

At the beginning of the 21st Century mankind flourished, they had never been more advanced- until the solar flare hit. Almost half of the planet was destroyed, but alongside Earth’s semi-destruction came other cosmic occurrences that could be neither predicted nor explained- only marvelled at in apprehensive wonder.
Planets believed for decades to be lifeless blossomed in the aftermath of the flare, sprouting – or perhaps revealing – the one thing mankind thought they’d never find outside their own planet…life.
Man had never felt more humbled by their own existence when life on these other planets became not only races of their own, but ones far more advanced than that of humans, making mankind appear much like the Neanderthal’s of its own past; it made them desperate to make peace rather than war; lest the entirety of the blue planet really be lost forever.
Fortunately these new life forms desired the same peaceful existence, and in the centuries that followed Earth created plentiful trade routes with the other worlds; benefiting from their technology, medical care and even education.
Inter-planetary schooling was now commonplace, even relationships began to blossom between species – though it was often still frowned upon much the way homosexuality had been an age ago – amongst countless other changes to life on Earth.
To mankind in seemed that in actuality, the aftermath of what was known for decades as the most tragic cataclysmic event in the history of the planet since the extinction of the dinosaurs, slowly became a beacon of hope, marked the advancement of Earth, and indeed the rest of the solar system, because aside from anything else, mankind was not as it feared to be for so long-
They were not alone.

Having finally reached maturity at nineteen years of age (in Earth years, that was) Kyungsoo was at last old enough to head out into the galaxy and find his own way in life; and perhaps a mate, but he wasn't counting on that one becoming even a possibility any time soon.
As such, Kyungsoo had been on Earth for exactly six weeks, and he was already sulking because it wasn't at all what he had imagined it to be. The pretty blue planet – well what was left after the flare – wasn't as easy to acclimatise to as he’d hoped, mostly because he had yet to make a single companion.
Friend as humans often called it.
Kyungsoo had never really fit in with his people back home, and so had believed that doing so here on Earth would be easier thanks to the race of Man still being decidedly primitive and easily enthralled by ‘aliens’.
Clearly he’d thought wrong.
Aside from companionship Kyungsoo had made the inter-world journey to a different planet from his own moon Io and was living at one of ‘New’ Earth’s many Universities because Ancient History fascinated him, and this planet was full of it, as well as being in possession of very important documentation from the archives of other planets and moons.
It made for a very intense course, but then again intensity wasn't something he was a stranger to.
Io, alongside a number of other moons belonging to planets other than his own mother planet Jupiter, had incredibly extreme living conditions, proving that just because the gift of life was granted to many places beyond Earth- didn't mean that it was going to be easy.
The moon that Kyungsoo called home had four hundred volcanoes on its surface that were not only active, but erupting near constantly, making temperature one of the biggest changes his body had to grow accustomed to. The fact that it was the middle of winter on Earth when he arrived quickly made the Ionean sure of one thing; he hated the cold.
On top of that, like most species these days, Kyungsoo had had Stella-Lungs fitted; a small device fitted into his own lungs that made it possible for him to breathe in any atmosphere, because Io’s atmosphere was made of sulphur dioxide it was unlikely that he’d be able to survive long breathing anything else otherwise.
The Stella range was Pluto’s biggest cash cow, and that fact was the sole reason for the dwarf planet being reinstated as an actual celestial body, meaning there were now four dwarf planets instead of the previous five. Without Stella most species wouldn't be able to have safe inter-planetary travel, so ironically for Earth, Kyungsoo thought, Pluto was now one of the most important planets in existence.
It was fascinating to him how one – granted one phenomenal – cosmic event caused the birth of life on so many moons and planets previously thought to be barren wastelands, caught in the net of the Sun’s gravitational pull and just spinning endlessly in space, eternally empty. It was sad, in a way. But now the solar system’s main terrestrial planets, the dwarf planets and thirty-eight moons from various other planets all sustained life in some form or another; including the Earth’s own moon, renamed Luna lifetimes before Kyungsoo even existed.
Whilst waiting for the day he was mature enough to travel alone, Kyungsoo had been fortunate enough to travel to several planets and moons with his father, who was a member of the Inter-Planetary Education Board. He’d enjoyed every second of it, which was why he’d eventually decided to study on Earth.
Which in turn had led him to today, sat in the campus Information Common (IC), watching a group of students that were an odd mix to behold; a couple of humans, another Ionean like him, a Charonite, a couple of Deimosens and a Nesonite. It seemed strange to Kyungsoo, that humans could be so at ease with species who were so obviously other, as though it had never been any other way.
Though for these particular humans, it probably hadn’t, and Kyungsoo had to admit – if only to himself – that he was incredibly jealous.
More so because the aliens seemed equally as relaxed with the humans too, and it made Kyungsoo (albeit spitefully) wonder what could possibly be so great about humans anyway, didn't understand why such a primitive life form could adapt to change so much better than him.
Turning away quickly when the group unexpectedly glanced over at him, Kyungsoo refocused his attention on the history books he had spread out on the desk before him, frowning because he still couldn't get used to just how busy the IC could be sometimes- but then again, the human race had always had a knack for overpopulating itself.
“Hi.” A deep voice spoke up to Kyungsoo’s left, causing him to jump in his seat at look up to see one of the humans he’d been watching now stood smiling at him, “I couldn't help but notice you were alone so…I wondered if maybe you’d like to join us?” he asked boldly, “My name’s Jongin, by the way, what’s yours?”
“No.” Kyungsoo said flatly, his previous jealously suddenly spilling over.
“That’s a very strange name.”
“No is obviously not my name.” Kyungsoo sniped, “It’s a word that means I do not want to join you and that ruckus over there.”
Jongin smiled again, and this time Kyungsoo noticed the little dimple in his left cheek, the handsome tan of his skin that complemented dark eyes that to the Ionean seemed as smouldering as the lava pits back home; it just served to irritate him further.
“Well I saw you looking our way and thought maybe you’d want to hang out, that’s all.” Jongin said, and Kyungsoo was so embarrassed by being caught staring that he lashed out, again.
“I only looked because of the amount of noise you’re all making whilst me, and most likely others, are trying to study.”
Jongin actually seemed guilty then, “I’m sorry, I’ll leave you to it then, but if you ever change your mind the offer will still remain.” He told him, and Kyungsoo watched in disbelief as the human walked away, and mentally slapped himself for being so rude and dismissing such a friendly offer.
Unable to concentrate on his studying after than mortifying encounter, Kyungsoo stole a couple of glances at the group of friends again, seriously considering going and asking if he could still join in – there was another Ionean in the group after all – but he couldn't seem to bring himself to just swallow his pride and get it over with.
So instead Kyungsoo packed up his things and decided to take a walk around campus to clear his head, wondering why things on Earth were so much more complicated than back home, and even then it had been difficult for him.
He just didn't seem to fit anywhere, or with anybody, and it was starting to hurt more than he would ever dare let on.
Still though, Kyungsoo was intrigued by this human, this Jongin, which quickly became pure surprise when said human came running after him a moment later, holding one of his own books out to him.
“You left this in the IC.” Jongin explained, “Thought you’d want it back.”
“Thank you, Jongin.” Kyungsoo said, cursing himself for how nice it felt to say his name, “And I’m sorry, for being so rude to you earlier- I’m Kyungsoo.”
“It’s already forgotten.” Jongin said, that same blinding smile on his face, “Did you want to though- hang out with us sometime I mean? Chanyeol said it’s strange for Ionean’s to seclude themselves from others.”
“Chanyeol?”
“The Ionean that was sat at our table. Y’know, tall, broad, eyes like coal and skin the colour of molten lava?”
Kyungsoo thought it was a pretty accurate description of his race, himself included – well if you forgo the part about being tall, Kyungsoo was rather on the short side for his species – and found himself smiling when Jongin laughed at his own explanation.
“What did you have in mind?” Kyungsoo asked.
“Maybe meet for lunch at the cafeteria and we can get to know one another a little- how’s that sound?”
I’ve got nothing to lose, “Okay, yes. I will meet you tomorrow, for lunch.”
“I’ll see you then.” Jongin promised, and watching him walk away for the second time had Kyungsoo thinking that whilst the Ionean race was perfectly adapted to the intense fires of Io-
Environmental intensity and natural fire was the only fire he was designed to deal with; this was something else entirely.
*
The next day, as promised, Jongin and his friends were already in the cafeteria waiting for Kyungsoo; they’d even left a seat free between Jongin and the other Ionean, Chanyeol.
During that first meeting Kyungsoo was mostly quiet, other than the formalities obviously, choosing instead to just observe and learn about each character around him.
Over the course of this short period of observation Kyungsoo discovered that the other humans in the little group, Sehun and Junmyeon, had known Jongin for years, the two Deimosens were named Jongdae and Minseok; Jongdae was a prince back on his own moon and Minseok was his servant, but they had grown so close over the years that the prince wanted him to be given the same educational opportunities as him.
It was very noble, in the Ionean’s opinion.
The relatively quiet Nesonite was Yixing, who after graduation intended to follow his father’s prestigious military footsteps. This left Baekhyun, a Charonite who was as outspoken and almost obnoxiously loud as was much of his race, but also incredibly beautiful, if crushed diamond covered silver stone was your idea of beautiful, of course.
Each different species had visual characteristics that somewhat matched the planet or moon that they called home; it was how Kyungsoo could so easily identify where they were from, thanks to his obsession with reading as many books as he possibly could about every subject he could find.
Yixing’s colouring resembled that of his home moon’s mother planet Neptune, a beautifully calm shade of blue that made him look like he’d be more at home in the water; he even had a couple of aquatic features too, though these clearly didn't hinder his life on dry land.
It was quite the opposite to Chanyeol, with whom Kyungsoo shared the same fiery colouring pertaining to their lava covered home on Io, which in turn was a stark contrast to Baekhyun, mottled silvery skin that was cool and smooth to touch, even his hair was so pale when the winter sun bounced off the strands it gave the illusion of brilliant white fire.
Minseok and Jongdae were originally from a moon that belonged to the red planet Mars, and as such their skin held the pigmentation of the Martian dust storms that often swept across the planet, only their skin was marbled with patterns that looked like ice, yet was hot to touch.
Kyungsoo was pleased to find that they were as friendly as they were fascinating, Chanyeol was a little intense perhaps, but then he was from Io, and he’d come from virtually nothing and worked hard to be where he was now, so Kyungsoo wasn't at all surprised by his fiery temperament.
He was a little impressed though, by his achievements at least.
But still it was the humans that were the constant draw of his attention, from the way they interacted to how remarkably different they appeared to the natural green and blue of the Earth, and Jongin differed still, to Kyungsoo at least, because he seemed to just belong within any race or species, open-minded and unassuming, and the Ionean envied him that.
“So can I know a little about you Kyungsoo, perhaps some of the things you like? Or the things you don’t.” Jongin asked suddenly, breaking his observations as he pushed a plate of fries towards him after being told Kyungsoo was still figuring out what human food he liked and what he never wanted to taste again.
Fries can stay though he thought as he chewed one carefully, then quickly shoved a couple more of the salted strips of potato into his mouth, fries can definitely stay.
“Well, I’m a teacher’s son so I guess learning must be in my blood because I love to learn, since coming to Earth I’ve realised I hate the cold,” Kyungsoo said, feeling warm inside (well more than usual) when Jongin laughed softly, the human’s attention solely on him, “And I’ve always thought about someday travelling the whole Solar System just to see each race and experience their culture.” He paused; feeling a little unsure then decided to speak anyway. “I’d like you to answer the same question Jongin, please.”
Jongin smiled, “I’ve always been interested in life on other planets, always wanted to learn what each species is and how they differ from my own but in many ways are much the same. I try not to judge anybody, because I believe that people being judgemental is what was leading Earth down the path of destruction long before the flare hit us, I also adore spicy food and have a pet dog.”
For some reason, the way he said it had Kyungsoo laughing quietly.
Being with this oddball group that fit so well together, even though only for a short time, was remarkably interesting to Kyungsoo, he’d even go as far as to see he quite liked them all- even if they were a little strange. It made him wish that their lunch break today would last much longer than it’s usual hour, but he knew he couldn't be late for history class.
Kyungsoo also couldn't deny the warmth that spread through him when Jongin walked him to his class and before he went inside asked him to hang out again soon; of course Kyungsoo hadn’t been able to decline, but just because the Ionean couldn't deny the heat that stirred within him whenever Jongin was in close proximity, didn't mean for a second that he wasn't afraid of it.
Or that he in fact wanted it at all.
*
Jongin was pretty much convinced he was in love already.
To him Kyungsoo was nothing short of adorable, and the difference in their races didn't concern him in the slightest. He already couldn't stop thinking about Kyungsoo’s dark eyes and hair that was so similar to the colour of ash Jongin wanted to reach out and touch it to see if it felt like ash too. He adored the deep molten colour of his skin and it didn't even bother Jongin that the Ionean’s had claws and teeth that were strong enough to smash up rocks; Kyungsoo was gorgeous.
The only thing that surprised him was how shy Kyungsoo was, for an Ionean at least- it wasn't something they were exactly known for, they were a race of people usually as fiery as the moon they came from. Jongin wanted Kyungsoo to know that he liked him, wanted to take him on a date, he didn't care that they hadn’t known each other for long; Jongin had never been one to beat about the bush when it came to something he knew he wanted.
He just hoped that the human method of courting would pull through for him.
Mind made up, Jongin found himself waiting around outside Kyungsoo’s last class of the day, clutching tightly a bouquet of white roses and a small box of chocolate truffles that he’d had to literally hide from Junmyeon; he was pretty sure his friend was a chocoholic.
“Hey Kyungsoo.” Jongin greeted when his unmistakable love interest appeared in the small crowd of students, “How was class?”
Kyungsoo seemed surprised (but pleased) to see him, “Oh hi Jongin, it wasn't too bad if you- what are those for?” he asked, noticing what he was holding.
“I- well…” Jongin stuttered, feeling suddenly nervous, “They’re gifts…for you.”
“For me?” Kyungsoo said, taking the flowers and chocolates from him, “Thank you…” he lowered his head to the roses and inhaled deeply, “These smell delicious.”
Strange word choice, Jongin thought, and was about to simply put it down to being brought up in different places until he realised the Ionean had meant that literally when started to eat – yes eat – the beautiful blooms.
“Chocolates?” Kyungsoo said when he was done, “I’ve read about them somewhere I think but- what’re they for?”
Jongin almost couldn't keep his mouth from dropping open because Kyungsoo had just eaten the roses he spent almost an hour choosing! “Well…you’re supposed to eat them.” He explained, watching as Kyungsoo took one out of the box and did just that.
The Ionean wrinkled his nose in distaste, “I think I preferred the roses.” Jongin was so embarrassed he half wanted to run away and hide somewhere forever, “Was there something else you wanted- besides to feed me a mid-morning snack?”
“Have you ever been skateboarding?” Jongin asked, shaking off his mortification to go with Plan B.
“Skateboarding?” Kyungsoo repeated, looking up at him with his head tilted in confusion as they walked in the direction of the dormitories they all lived in, their classes over thanks to it being a half day, “Isn’t that a bit obsolete, now that Earth has hover boards?”
Jongin smiled, “An ancient sport it may be, but programming a hover board to just do things for you takes no skill at all in comparison to pulling off the moves yourself.”
“Alright.” Kyungsoo nodded, “I’ll try it.”
The Ionean looked as surprised to be agreeing to his suggestion, as Jongin was that he’d said he would; pleasantly surprised, of course.
“When would you like to go?”
Kyungsoo looked thoughtful for a moment, “I’m free now.”
“Now is good.”
This is definitely going better than expected.
“Oh Jongin?” Kyungsoo said, voice lilting into question, “Thanks for the gifts.”
Jongin couldn't stop smiling as he headed quickly back home to pick up his board whilst Kyungsoo did the same but to drop off his books, meeting up again not even fifteen minutes later.
Taking Kyungsoo out to the Borderlands – part of the barren landscape still dead or damaged by the flare – because it had some naturally really great places to board, Jongin showed him how to use it before telling him to try it himself.
It didn't take long for the Ionean to grasp the basics – Jongin put it down to him being far more advanced than humans – and he was quickly showing him how to do little jumps before showing him some of his own personal favourite tricks.
Over the next couple of hours Jongin taught Kyungsoo how to bomb drop, which involved jumping onto the board and then onto a ramp. The hippy jump, which meant he had to ride with his feet over the bolts whilst approaching an obstacle, he then had to jump over the obstacle whilst the board went underneath, then land over the bolts and ride away.
Jongin had to admit he was impressed when Kyungsoo picked that one up first time.
He taught him a few other tricks – backside noseslide, axle stall and a nose manual – and was surprised but pleased again and again when not only did Kyungsoo keep all but perfecting the moves insanely quickly, but seemed to actually be enjoying himself too.
“How do you learn so damn fast?” Jongin asked as they headed back to the dormitories well after dark, “It took me years to perfect some of those moves!”
Kyungsoo smiled, “I’m used to outrunning lava from erupting volcanoes back home- I can pull off some serious dodges if I have to. This wasn't so different…definitely more fun though.”
“You really enjoyed yourself- you’re not just saying that.” Jongin said, heart skipping several beats when Kyungsoo shook his head.
“I’m not just saying it, I had a good time with you, Jongin.” He told him, “You’re fun to be around.”
“Then…would you like to spend more time with me? Just the two of us like this?”
“Yes.”
By the time they said goodnight and Jongin was back home, he felt like he was floating around on cloud nine, Kyungsoo’s shy smile etched into his mind forever.
Yes he thought happily, I’m definitely in love already.
*
Jongin spent the following few weeks trying to show Kyungsoo that he liked him as more than just a friend; he made him a little skateboard key ring to remind him of their time together, bought him a history archive tablet to read and even gave him a holographic pet in the form of a penguin.
The trouble was that although Kyungsoo was clearly grateful for the gifts he received, it seemed the Ionean remained completely clueless about Jongin’s ever growing affections towards him; it was infuriating really, and a little embarrassing because the last thing he wanted was to make himself look desperate and put Kyungsoo off entirely.
As such, Jongin had then decided to step up his game, taking Kyungsoo to the Virtual Reality Cinema, inviting him out with his friends so he wouldn't feel like so much of an ‘outsider’, Jongin always made sure to walk him home and tell him how much he enjoyed their time together, he treated him to lunch more than once and even took him to the Inter-Planetary Animal Sanctuary so that the Ionean could see some of the creatures that inhabited planets and moons from every corner of the Solar System.
The only sign Kyungsoo gave that might indicate some sort of romantic feelings towards him was that he was still rather shy with him more so than with anybody else; Jongin only hoped that it was a sign that meant he was at least starting to like him too.
“It’s so beautiful here.” Kyungsoo said, looking out at the lush greenery and abundant wildlife that now flourished ‘over the border’ of the DMZ rather than people.
Jongin nodded his agreement, “I come here all the time whenever I feel the need to clear my mind of the stresses of life- I thought you’d like to see it, too.”
When the world started collapsing many differences were forced aside for the survival of the species, new alliances were formed, and the two Koreas were just one example of this.
A peace treaty was signed and the people of the North moved into the South – where there was far greater protection – and the newly joined government decided to use the Northlands to cultivate agriculture.
North Korea had never been so peaceful.
Kyungsoo seemed fascinated by the whole area, near constantly taking photographs on his palm pilot for his studies.
“Thank you Jongin,” Kyungsoo smiled, appearing to almost glow in the low slanting sunlight, “For showing me this place- it holds a peace I would never find on Io.”
Though the words were heartfelt and sincere, Jongin knew that Kyungsoo just didn't get it, didn't seem to understand just how badly he wanted to be able to call him his own. Taking a deep breath, he figured the direct approach was the only logical option left.
Bending lower when Kyungsoo opened his mouth to say something else, Jongin took the opportunity to kiss him, surprised by how soft his lips were; like marshmallows or plush little cushions.
Perfect, he thought, lost in the moment…or at least he was until the Ionean was jerking away from him harshly.
“What do you think you are doing?”
“I’m sorry I was so forward but I’ve been trying to show you for weeks that I like you-“ Jongin rambled, suddenly nervous, “I like you a lot.”
Kyungsoo was clearly taken aback, not expecting that to be his answer, “But you’re human.”
“So?” Jongin said, trying to ignore the flicker of hurt inside his chest at the way Kyungsoo all but spat the word.
“Well in case you hadn’t noticed Jongin, I’m not human, not even close!”
Jongin smiled bravely, “I did notice Kyungsoo, of course I noticed- I just don't care. I like you and that’s pretty much all there is to it.”
“It may not bother you, but I’m certainly bothered.” Kyungsoo snapped, and the flicker of hurt inside Jongin’s chest expanded slowly until it became a hole with nothing but the pain of rejection pouring into it.
“But…inter-species relationships happen all the time, surely you know that.” Jongin tried, unwilling to just give up, “Please Kyungsoo-“
“Not where I’m from they don't.”
Jongin was horrified – and crestfallen – when Kyungsoo all but ran away from him, leaving him standing there with unexpected tears in his eyes, “I’m sorry.” He whispered aloud to nobody.
Guess I misread the signs after all.
*
“So, how’d it go with ET last night?” Sehun asked the next day, when Jongin met him by their lockers.
“Hey,” Jongin said, elbowing him playfully, “Don’t call him that.”
Sehun laughed, “Well he is an Extra Terrestrial isn’t he?”
“Yeah but that phrase is so out-dated now it’s actually sad.”
“Actually ET is a classic-“ Sehun laughed, “Seriously though, how did it go?”
Jongin sighed, rejection still a sting in his chest, “He wasn't seeing well…me I guess so I did the only thing I could think of and kissed him.” he slammed his locker shut harder than intended, “Sehun he ran away- literally.”
“Damn,” Sehun said, letting out a low whistle, “That sucks. But I’ve got two lots of news for you today, there’s good and bad so which one first?”
“Good news would be great right about now.”
Sehun smiled, “Well I took the liberty of looking into how to court an Ionean for you seeing as Earth courting was leaving you pretty much empty handed.”
“And?” Jongin said, eager to learn something new despite the blow to his confidence.
“Apparently back home on Io, when an Ionean has found somebody of interest they go on a sort of little mission to find a pretty igneous rock, that’s-“
“I know what an igneous rock is Sehun!”
Sehun threw his hands up in mock surrender, “Just making sure- anyway, they- or in this case you, find a pretty rock and present it to your love interest, and if Kyungsoo then gives you one in return then he’s willing to mate.”
Jongin almost choked on the soda he’d just opened, “M-mate? What do you mean mate?”
“Ionean’s don't date, as a rule, they just choose a mate and um- get down to it, so to speak.”
The amused smirk on Sehun’s face gave away that yes, his face had gone as red as he suddenly felt it should be, “What’s the bad news?” he asked, trying to compose himself.
“Chanyeol has taken an interest in Kyungsoo too.” Sehun told him as gently as he could, “Last I heard he was already on the look out for his crystal of choice.”
The words Kyungsoo had spat at him the previous day swam in and out of focus as though he were looking at them through water, and the way Jongin’s face fell at the memory was obvious enough for Sehun to notice, “What’re you thinking?”
“That I should probably just give up,” Jongin sighed, “Kyungsoo already told me inter-species relationships don't happen where he’s from. He’ll be happier with Chanyeol.”
“Bullshit.” Sehun snapped so harshly Jongin jumped, “Sorry- look, you like him don't you?”
“Like him- Sehun I think I’m falling in love with him!”
“Then no giving up, okay? Not on my watch.” Sehun ordered good naturedly, “Besides honestly, I think Kyungsoo’s just afraid to admit the way he feels about you- it can’t be easy, coming to a new planet alone, wondering if you’ll fit it. All you have to do is show him that you’re a much better catch than Chanyeol.”
Jongin laughed, though it was weak, “No pressure then.”
“You’ll be fine.” Sehun assured as they headed to their first class of the day, “But if you want a heads up I think obsidian is a favourite for Ionean’s in general, and I’ve already got Baekhyun out on a little mission to find a place that sells genuine crystals and such for not an extortionate amount of money- I’m sure he’ll report back soon enough.”
“Baekhyun?” Jongin frowned, “Why Baekhyun?”
“Because he’s crude, annoying, obnoxious and always following me around!”
Jongin smiled then, “Maybe he likes you?”
“Is that how they court people on Charon?” Sehun gasped, looking horrified, “By irritating them to death?” he scoffed, “I doubt Baekhyun would court anybody- that way too flirty Charonite ‘likes’ anything with a damned pulse, and perhaps even then that’s optional.”
“Meow, claws away, it was just a suggestion.” Jongin laughed, which in turn made Sehun frown.
“What’s so funny?”
Jongin shrugged, “Nothing, your ranting just makes you sound like you’re covering for the fact that you might be starting to like him, that’s all.”
It was Sehun’s turn to elbow him, “Human’s man, that’s it, that’s all I’m down for- preferably a female human.”
“Charonite’s are technically both and can reproduce as either so-“
“Which brings me back to the human thing.”
“If you say so.”
“So this is what I get for trying to help you woo lava boy-“ Sehun gasped in mock offense, “Abuse.”
Jongin shook his head, laughing, “Thank you Sehun, you’ve been a big help.”
He just had to hope that despite what happened yesterday, Kyungsoo would not only forgive him, but also find him worthy.
*
I can’t believe Jongin kissed me! That he wanted to be with me! I can’t believe Jongin kissed me!
Kyungsoo’s mind had been stuck on one single, irritating track for days now, repeating over and over what had happened between him and Jongin- what the human had said to him.
A human and an Ionean- Kyungsoo had never heard of such a match, it was ridiculous; he couldn't allow himself for a second to believe that Jongin was actually being serious.
But what if he was being serious?
Serious or not, that kiss had left Kyungsoo feeling strange, he couldn't stop thinking about it for a start, and each time he did, each time he thought about the plush of Jongin’s lips against his own, it left him feeling…well honestly kind of tingly all over, and warm too, low in his gut like a slow burning fire had been stoked for the first time in an age.
Instinctually, it was thrilling, but mentally it left Kyungsoo weighed down by a thick cloud of confusion that led to him avoiding Jongin and his friends in the days that followed simply because he didn't know what he was supposed to do or say now.
Unfortunately that plan didn't work out for long when he rounded a corner on the way to his locker one afternoon and walked almost straight into Chanyeol.
“Sorry- wasn't watching where I was going.” Kyungsoo apologised, moving around the other Ionean and frowning when he wouldn't let him passed.
“Before you run off in a hurry, can I have a word?” Chanyeol asked, his frown deepening as he followed him to his locker.
“Is everything alright Chanyeol?” Kyungsoo asked, wondering what was going on.
Chanyeol nodded, “Fine, or at least it will be.” He smiled, handing him a gift bag coloured deep blue with silver handles, “It’s a gift, for you.”
Opening the bag carefully, Kyungsoo’s eyes widened, Chanyeol’s weird behaviour suddenly becoming perfectly clear when he pulled out of the bag a large, rough cut obsidian crystal; it was impressive to say the least, glittering at him in the light like black diamonds.
“It’s overwhelming.” Kyungsoo almost gasped, and it was, almost too much so, “Thank you.”
Chanyeol didn't say anything further, just winked at him and walked away, leaving Kyungsoo stood there wondering why his life on Earth was so much more complicated than his life on Io.
Needing time and space to think Kyungsoo tried to find a place where he could be alone, where he wouldn’t run into Jongin and now apparently Chanyeol – he knew that gift was an offer for becoming his mate – but without them, he was just back to being the loner in the corner with no friends and nobody to talk to because other students seemed to just either pretend he wasn't there or turn their backs to him to speak to one another instead each time he tried to strike up a conversation with somebody new.
It made him miserable.
“Ionean’s aren’t supposed to seclude themselves from others.” A familiar deep voice said during lunchtime one day when Kyungsoo wasn't expecting it, and he looked up to see Jongin staring down at him, as handsome as ever.
He almost wished he hadn’t looked, because the human was wearing a white shirt that was partially unbuttoned to reveal part of his chest and it was making Kyungsoo feel uncharacteristically hot all over again.
It’s that damned tan skin he cursed silently, why does it have to look so good?
“Did you want something Jongin?” Kyungsoo asked, hoping he didn't sound rude.
Jongin actually looked a little shy, “I just wanted to apologise for going about everything all wrong before- I didn't understand that things like dating would be done differently where you’re from.” He explained, “I must have looked so stupid to you.”
The Ionean wasn't sure he was following, “What do you mean?”
He watched then as Jongin pulled a small box from his trouser pocket and handed it to him, it was silver and tied with a pretty green ribbon, “I got this for you- I hope you like it.”
Heart suddenly pounding wildly, Kyungsoo untied the ribbon and opened the box slowly, revealing inside sat on a satin cushion a flat, smooth piece of snowflake obsidian; it was so beautiful it had his jaw dropping open.
“Are you sure you know what you’re doing Jongin?” Kyungsoo asked, “What it means that you’ve given this to me?”
Jongin nodded, “I do.”
Kyungsoo couldn't help but run his fingers over the cool smoothness of the beautiful stone, “Chanyeol already gave me one.” He blurted before he could stop himself.
The way Jongin’s face dropped had the Ionean wondering if he should just stitch his mouth shut, maybe then he’d stop saying such stupid things, “Oh, I see,” the human said, smiling despite the obvious hurt, “Well as you’ve accepted my gift you must not have made a decision about Chanyeol yet so-“ he paused, took a deep breath, “I ask only that you consider me anyway, and that you stop hiding from us because I’m not going to pressure you for an answer…or anything, actually. I care about you too much for that.”
Not trusting himself to speak again, Kyungsoo simply nodded and let himself be led across to the campus coffee shop where they were all hanging out together, making plans for the weekend apparently.
Chanyeol winked at him (again) and Kyungsoo noticed Jongin deliberately ignore it; it made him smile.
“Can I get you a drink?” Jongin asked politely.
“Don't worry, I’ve got it covered.” Chanyeol interjected before Kyungsoo could answer, already on his way to the counter to order.
“Thank you.” Kyungsoo said when Chanyeol returned moments later with a chilli hot chocolate for him.
“You’ll love it.” Chanyeol said matter of factly.
He didn't bother to tell him that he already knew he didn't like chocolate; it wasn't worth the hassle.
After that Kyungsoo felt a little awkward, sitting there talking about plans with the group that he wasn't sure he was even invited to.
“Would you like to choose something for us to do?” Jongin asked him with a beautiful smile, making Kyungsoo wonder if he could read minds, “As you’re the newest member of the group.”
“Well…I’ve not been here long so I haven’t really seen much,” Kyungsoo paused, but was encouraged by Jongin’s smile despite himself, “But I have been kind of wanting to go to that ‘Old’ Earth Arcade place, see how humans used to have fun before the solar flare.” The second the words left his lips he worried he’d spoken wrongly, “Unless that’s too boring of course…then we can do something else.”
“I’ve been before- it’s a lot of fun.” Jongin assured him, and Kyungsoo couldn't help but smile, even if Chanyeol was eyeing him increasingly suggestively from the other side of the table.
“I would like to see it too.” Jongdae spoke up, causing Minseok to quickly agree; “I’ve noticed the common folk on any planet or moon always seem to have the most fun.”
Chanyeol smirked, “I’m great at sports so I’m up to the challenge if any of you think you can give me one.”
Kyungsoo didn't really understand the connection between an arcade and sports, but he did see the pointed look the other Ionean sent Jongin, goading him to rise to the challenge.
To his surprise, Jongin didn't acknowledge Chanyeol’s behaviour at all; Kyungsoo decided then that he liked just how calm and collected the human could be when pressured.
All his life Kyungsoo had never been impressed by wealth or power, and certainly not arrogance, and his moon was full of Ionean’s obsessed with all of those things. Being a hot headed and fiery tempered race tended to make a lot of them single-minded to go along with it. That was one of the main reasons why Kyungsoo had never fit in back home; he was too quiet, too shy and even-tempered. He’d thought he would fit in better with the humans on ‘New’ Earth despite their obvious differences, but he was so socially awkward here he was starting to think maybe he’d thought wrong.
Perhaps he should have chosen a different planet.
But Jongin is on this planet he thought, shoving it away almost as soon as it arrived…almost, because with Jongin around things weren’t so bad, the human welcomed him into his life and into his group of friends without so much as a hesitation – even after he was rude to him – and if Kyungsoo was being truly honest with himself, he’d been drawn to him ever since.
*
“So are we all in for the arcade this weekend?” Jongin asked, and it made Kyungsoo smile that he’d tried to gently push for them to do what the Ionean had suggested, more so when the human stealthily switched his hot chocolate for a black, unsweetened coffee.
Clearly he’d remembered that Kyungsoo liked the bitter taste, “Thanks.” He whispered, hoping Chanyeol couldn't hear him.
“I'll come if I can be in the attractive one’s team.” Baekhyun piped up, sending a flirty look in Sehun’s direction and Kyungsoo frowned in confusion when Jongin laughed.
“There aren’t any teams in an arcade Baekhyun.” Sehun almost groaned, making Jongin laugh harder.
Kyungsoo just decided he was obviously missing some human in-joke between the two of them.
They all agreed that it sounded like fun, and Kyungsoo felt warmed by how considerate Jongin had been today considering what had happened between them, but then his human was thoughtful all the time.
My human?
The realisation of the way he’d just thought of Jongin as his made him feel suddenly hot rather than warm, but this wasn't any usual warmth- this was the heat of arousal.
Or it was the beginnings of it anyway- and all because Jongin was nice to him.
“Are you okay?” Jongin asked him a minute or so later, “You suddenly feel very warm.”
Kyungsoo was mortified that the human could feel his body heat from next to him.
“I’m fine, don't worry.” Kyungsoo told him, noticing first the smirk on his face, then the way the other Ionean looked him up and down.
His behaviour was making Kyungsoo increasingly uncomfortable.
Kyungsoo had never had anybody interested in mating with him before, and now he had two males from completely different species and he was so torn it made him hurt in places he didn't know he could hurt.
On one hand there was Chanyeol, he was of the same species and definitely somebody his parents would approve of. They could easily have offspring together but the other Ionean was arrogant and clearly thought far too highly of his own sexual prowess.
Then on the other hand there was Jongin, the human that Kyungsoo knew would disappoint his parents based on race alone (they may even cast him from the family line), he had no idea how his kind bred with humans or if they even could, but Jongin was kind and funny and made Kyungsoo feel just by being near him.
Why is this so confusing?
For the first time Kyungsoo thought that perhaps he finally understood all those journal entries he’d read of long deceased human teenagers, displaying how their every thought and feeling contradicted itself, how they felt everything and nothing all at the same time and how they felt like they didn't fit in but at the same time were stuck in the middle of something so much bigger than just them alone.
“I have to leave.” Kyungsoo said suddenly, “I will see you all at the weekend, please excuse me.”
Before anybody could say anything Kyungsoo found himself all but running back to his dorm room simply because he didn't know what else to do; honestly all this confusion was starting to scare him.
Trying to read a book in an effort to distract himself from his own dizzying thoughts, Kyungsoo hadn’t been settled long when there was a knock at his door.
Jongin? He wondered, heart fluttering as he went to open it, only to find Chanyeol standing on the other side.
“Chanyeol- why’re you here?” Kyungsoo asked when the taller Ionean pushed his way into the room without an invite.
“I can feel your arousal like it’s my own Kyungsoo,” Chanyeol told him, “And I’m here to help you sate it.”
The kiss Chanyeol pulled him into then was hard and almost punishing, making Kyungsoo shiver in a way that had nothing to do with arousal.
“Don't you dare-“ Kyungsoo almost shouted as he shoved Chanyeol away, clawing at him instinctively to get him to back off, “Don't you dare presume that any arousal I may feel is for you.”
Chanyeol laughed, “Who else would it be for- your human?” he shook his head, “He’ll never be enough to satisfy the fire that burns inside you, Kyungsoo.”
“That’s my decision to make, not yours.” Kyungsoo told him firmly, hating that he clearly saw Jongin as inferior, “And if you must know, I intend to accept Jongin as my mate- I never did like males who think they’ve won the prize before the game is done.”
Chanyeol almost growled at him, “You’re making a big mistake.”
“And it is mine to make, Chanyeol, so please leave.”
With no choice but to comply, the other Ionean did just that, and Kyungsoo slammed the door shut behind him. Feeling hurt and kind of violated made him realise though, just how much he really did want Jongin and how stupid he’d been to ignore it and make the human think that he wasn't good enough for him because he was far more than enough- he was everything.
An hour or so later Kyungsoo almost cried in relief when a second knock at the door revealed Jongin stood there looking all kinds of worried, “Chanyeol smashed up the table we were still sitting at and I’m afraid to hope what that means I just- I had to make sure you were alright. He didn't hurt you did he?”
Kyungsoo shook his head, “I’m fine, really. I do have something for you though, so do come in.”
Rummaging around in a box he kept in the bottom of his closet, Kyungsoo retrieved the small piece of smooth cut obsidian he kept wrapped safely in tissue paper for the day he might be lucky enough to find a mate.
And today is that day he smiled to himself as he turned back to Jongin, handing him the stone, heart pounding in nervous anticipation.
“It’s beautiful.” Jongin said, eyes widening as he turned the stone over in his hands, “Are you sure?” he asked, their gazes locking.
“It turns out my own race aren’t so great after all so…I do if you still want to.” Kyungsoo said shyly, gasping in surprised pleasure when his human’s answer came in the form of a passionate kiss that took his breath away.
Pulling Jongin closer, Kyungsoo didn't feel at all shy anymore; his mate had accepted his gift and now he wanted nothing more than to show him how Ionean’s love.
“We’ve got all day…all night too.” Jongin laughed softly as he pulled away slightly.
“I know, and if you’re ready I intend to use it well.” Kyungsoo said, feeling a rush of affection for his new mate when he looked suddenly bashful.
“I am I just- I’m just not sure how…I mean are you…” Jongin huffed at himself, “I hope you don't find me lacking.”
“Anatomically speaking, I’m much the same as you so don't worry,” Kyungsoo assured him, stretching up to steal another kiss, “And I chose you Jongin, so it’s not possible for me to find you lacking anything- I’ve been ready for this day my whole life.”
It was Jongin’s turn to kiss him this time, as he moved them both closer to the bed and stripping one another of their clothes as they went, pausing only for his mate to set his obsidian gift down on the bedside table.
“You’re so beautiful.” Jongin praised when Kyungsoo bared himself to him for the first time, and the Ionean could hear the wild pounding of his human’s heart; he was nervous and excited at the same time.
“Well you’re the most handsome human I’ve ever seen,” Kyungsoo said, reaching out to run his hands over the tan skin he already loved so much, “And I want you to mate with me as you would if I were human.”
Jongin smirked as he pushed him down onto the bed and crawled over him, “In that case baby…you want me to make love to you.”
Make love Kyungsoo repeated inside his head, I like the sound of that.
The Ionean had no idea how much time passed with him laid out on the bed, hard and desperate and going damned near crazy with desire he’d never felt before when his human quickly learned how to touch him in ways that had him seeing stars and begging mindlessly.
“Please Jongin…please.” He pleaded over and over.
“Ssh…” Jongin hushed, kissing him quiet and pressing his hands against the pillow, their fingers laced together, “I’m right here…”
By the time his mate was finally pushing inside him, stretching him open with his cock so wonderfully Kyungsoo was so hot all over he actually started to steam, something that only happened when his kind were in some kind of frenzy.
“Oh.” Kyungsoo moaned when Jongin pushed deeper inside him, I’m definitely frenzied alright.
The way Kyungsoo’s increased body temperature made his human lover sweat aroused him more than he would have thought possible; Jongin was so beautiful.
It felt so good, so fucking perfect to mate with a human Kyungsoo had to wonder how anybody ever got anything done all day when sex could feel like that.
“More…please Jongin…you feel amazing inside me.” He praised when he noticed his lover trembling with what he assumed to be nerves, distracting him by kissing and nipping at his jaw.
“Kyungsoo…” Jongin moaned, and it was a sound Kyungsoo wished he could hear on loop forever.
“Harder.” He demanded, feeling his untouched cock throb against his abdomen when Jongin did exactly that, thrusting hard and fast in a way that made him never want to stop.
“Shit, close Kyungsoo,” Jongin panted, struggling to keep his control, “so close.”
But the Ionean wasn't ready to stop yet, and so had his lover pull out briefly and turn onto his back, where Kyungsoo then wasted no time in straddling his thighs and sinking back down onto his cock in one slick move.
“You look so fucking good Kyungsoo…” Jongin praised, gripping the Ionean’s hips as he found his rhythm and rode his cock hard and fast, “Wet with pleasure…taking every inch of my cock.”
They were such dirty words, but they only served to make Kyungsoo hotter, “Jongin!” he moaned, so close to release he could almost taste it.
When Kyungsoo leaned down to kiss his lover’s already swollen lips, he loved the way Jongin held him, keeping him safe and secure even when Kyungsoo had to shift slightly to press his hands against the wall above the bed, clawing at it hard the closer to orgasm he got.
His orgasm finally hit like a flare of heat unravelling inside him, and Kyungsoo tore out pieces of plaster from the wall as he came so hard he could barely keep moving to ride Jongin into screaming ecstasy too.
“Fuck I’m- Kyungsoo!” was all the warning Jongin gave before he too climaxed, his eyes rolling back as he kept thrusting shallowly inside him until clearly too sensitive to stand it any longer.
“Okay that…was amazing.” Jongin panted when they collapsed together in a sated (for the moment anyway), sweaty heap on the bed.
Kyungsoo laughed breathlessly, “That it was- what is it?” he asked when his human looked shy all over again.
“I can’t believe I just did that.” Jongin said, “I’ve never even kissed a boy on a first date before!”
“Well…I’m not your regular boy.” Kyungsoo pointed out, “Was it too much- do you regret it? Because my species mate for life unless separated by death…I probably should have told you that before-”
Jongin kissed him to stop him rambling, “No and no.” he said quietly, “I could never regret anything I do with you Kyungsoo I just think we should maybe slow down a little now we’re um…mated?” he laughed to hide his awkwardness, “Maybe date like a human for a while…”
Understanding that humans generally needed much longer to mate with somebody and feel comfortable in their companionship, Kyungsoo nodded, “Anything you want.” He smiled, kissing him slowly, knowing he would spend forever addicted to his taste, “You will have to meet my parents though- and after that to be with me this way you’ll need some stamina…Ionean’s have a very high sex drive you know.”
“Oh really?” Jongin said, lips curving into a wickedly sexy smirk, “Then maybe I’ll need to practise.”
Kyungsoo smiled, “With the fire you’ve started in me Jongin…I don't think it will be a problem.”
Jongin’s answering laugh was like music to his ears, and Kyungsoo couldn't believe how lucky he was, to have found the mate he’d feared he’d never find in the one place he never expected to find him, so as it turned out-
Earth was the right choice for him, after all.

‘Trust your heart if the seas catch fire, live by love though the stars walk backward.’ - EE Cummings.
